COMMUNITY SENSITIZATION ON ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST GIRLS AND WOMEN

We sensitized and engaged the people of Owode, Ajegunle during our community outreach on the 29th of August, 2020 on Sexual & Gender Based Violence(SGBV) and how we all can join hands to eliminate SGBV in our society. We had a total number of 100 people in attendance (They were engaged in batches)

At the end of the session, we had increase in community initiatives to prevent and respond to SGBV, percentage increase in knowledge of the community on Sexual and Gender based violence

We all must join hands to prevent and stop Sexual Abuse in Nigeria and the world at large. Preventing it means stopping sexual  abuse before it even has a chance to happen. This means changing the social norms that allow it to exist in the first place, from individual attitudes, values, and behaviors to laws, institutions, and widespread social norms.

Prevention is everyone’s responsibility. We can all create and promote safe environments. Promote and model healthy attitudes and relationships; and also believe survivors and assist them in finding resources and their voices.

Together we can build safe and healthy communities .

EMPOWERING AND ENGAGING WOMEN AS CHANGE ADVOCATES IN THEIR COMMUNITIES

To mark this year’s International Women’s Day, we held A Brunch With 20 Selected Women who were equipped with the necessary information and tools to engage, advocate, respond and intervene in their communities in line with this year’s theme on the International Women’s Day titled” Women in Leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19

The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women’s equality.

Our Women Change Advocates  have been equipped with the neccessary informations and tools to engage, advocate, respond and intervene in their communities.

FIND SOME INSIGHTS BELOW

A) The situation before the intervention

  • The rate of Gender Based Violence in Ikorodu LGA is very high
  • There were no Women Change Advocates on ground to advocate for GBV in those communities
  • Inadequate Coordination among Partners working on GBV
  • Low response to GBV in those communities
  • Victims lack first hand response
  • Inadequate/Poor response of security personnels

B) The purpose of the intervention?

  • To engage stakeholders in selected communities as change advocates to reduce GBV in Ikorodu LGA.

C) The Impact or difference that occurred as a result of the intervention.

  • The differences that occured as a result of our intervention are as follows;
  • Community Based Advocacy Committee is now in place
  • We now have first hand respondents to GBV in those communities
  • Victims are now opening up due to improved confidence in the Committee Structures put in place to protect Women & Girls.

TESTIMONY FROM ONE OF OUR PARTICIPANTS

“The program was an eye opener to the many Gender related issues facing women of our generation and younger, knowing that gender base violence is on the increase, hence there’s need for us as community advocates to be up and doing, silence is not an option for us. And there’s also the need to create more grassroot community awareness campaign, to sensitize women on their rights to speak up against any form of violence, just as the theme of the last women’s day celebration ” I choose to challenge” it is high time we challenge every form of violence against women and girls, by speaking out. Information is power, when women know where to channel their reports and are sure of getting justice, then they’ll trust the advocates more”

CAPACITY BUILDING WORKSHOP FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT LEVEL INTERDOMINATIONAL PLATFORMS FOR PROMOTING GENDER EQUITABLE NORMS AND PREVENTION OF VAMG/SGBV/HP/SHRH IN IKORODU LGA, LAGOS STATE.

The Workshop was held in Ikorodu in collaboration with  CEWHIN and Al-mubarak Islamic Foundation on the 26th & 27th of April, 2021.

The goal of the workshop was to establish a high level of multi-faith collaboration related to GBV and VAWG/HP activities and outcomes.

We had Chairman, CAN Ikorodu Division, Pastors of churches and Chief Imams of various Mosques in attendance

Faith based leaders are one of the strategic stakeholders in the prevention of sexual and gender based violence as well as violence against women and girls because have access to different segments of the population, including those who are more marginalized and harder to reach. They are trusted by a large proportion of the members of the community and play a prominent role in shaping community beliefs, practices and behaviour.

We believe that when stakeholders synergize these vices will be eliminated.

Together, we can build safe and healthy communities

HOME LEARNING INITIATIVE

We have successfully enrolled and taught 60 children in Owode & Ishashi-Ibeshe community, in Ikorodu LGA Lagos, who do not have access to digital learning during this pandemic.

The Home Learning Initiative was developed as a stop in the gap learning of vulnerable children as a result of the closure of the schools by the Government due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and do not have access to learning materials.

The education of these millions of children, who fall within this bracket are denied access to education and may affect their development and further compound the high rate of poverty.

The Home Learning Initiative has adopted two communities and begun to intervene by distributing textbooks and exercise books as well as teaching these children various subjects taught in the school.
